SHEARING DAY OPEN HOUSE

waiting to be shorn

January 8, 2012

10am-4pm

460 West River Road, Schuylerville, NY  12871

The Foster Sheep Farm would like to welcome you and your family to our sheep shearing open house.  This yearly event is a cherished tradition here on the farm.  As the winter days roll in, the sheep are moved into the barn in preparation of the lambing season.  Each year before the lambs are born, every ewe is given their annual “haircut”.  Friends gather to help with the event and witness the unveiling of a year’s growth.  This year approximately 70 sheep will be shorn.  Gwen Hinman from Acworth, New Hampshire will be joining us once again as our shearer.  An amazing talent to watch, Gwen makes shearing look easy.  She is a second generation shearer, having shorn sheep from here to New Zealand.  After the fleece is removed it will be sorted and graded by its value to hand spinners.

At the farm, in the old farmhouse you will find “The Yarn Shop at Foster Sheep Farm”.   The shop will be open from 10am till 4pm to offer a warm refuge from the winter weather.  On this day local knitters, spinners, and weavers will be on hand to demonstrate their crafts and answer your questions. The shop carries a selection of wool from area farmers and commercial lines as well.  Also many knitters’ notions are available.  10% of all yarn sales will be donated to the 3 Bags Full Campaign  http://www.saratogaplan.org/FosterSheepFarm.htm, in support the permanent conservation of the Foster Sheep Farm.

This campaign is sponsored by Saratoga Plan, a not-for-profit land trust that works to preserve family farms, natural habitats, and trail corridors in Saratoga County.  Their volunteers will be joining us to provide information about this important cause.

Come enjoy this wonderful day on the farm!!
